I found a story about a suicide bomb attack on CNN, but did not find it on FoxNews or MSNBC. The story is from Friday Sept. 24th. One part focuses on the bombing of a civilian bus and the other focuses on the failed bombing of an Army base. I think FoxNews and MSNBC didn't cover it because it was a small bombing and from other research I did more bombings adn violence happened on saturday and sunday of that same weekend so maybe they got the info about friday late but decided to let it go because of the bigger stories. I also trust CNN more than FoxNews and MSNBC and CNN tends to try to tell as many news stories as they can, big or small. Another thought is that no American lives were lost, so maybe FowNews and MSNBC didn't think it was important since no American's died. We do need to know about this story because the Taliban is so crazy now to just attack their own people instead of focusing attacks on their intended target.

free blog
So for this class we have to blog, obviously.... I really didn't like the idea of this initially but I have to admit it has grown on me. Not only do I think even having a blog is kind of awesome, so far the things we have blogged about have also been pretty friggin sweet. I got really happy when I discovered how to put pictures in my blog. I also really like that we have to comment on our classmates blogs. I read the blog for everyone that I follow every time there is a new assignment. I already have some favorite blogs from my classmates. This blog situation has opened a whole new horizon of awesomeness. When I blogged for another class freshmen year we blogged about stupid stuff and it was just generally irritating. So this class and this blog have both converted me, and I am enjoying a new relationship with media while exploring justice issues.

Serial Killer

I had a really hard time finding a story about a recent serial killer, it was easy to find a court update on an old case, but finding an original article about the case proved extremely difficult. I did find an article about a man who is suspected of being a serial killer and is still under investigation for the murders.
The article focused equally on the suspect and the victims. What the article says about the suspected killer is that he is known to have killed one person but they have linked him to other murders in other areas. There were no statistics about other serial killers mentioned. There was mention of multiple law enforcement agencies working together to investigate properly and thoroughly so if they discover the suspect did murder more people he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Some victims were mentioned by name, but others were just described because they are still investigating if the suspect murdered them also. There wasn't any specific mention of the community in which he operated because he moved between several communities and states. I thought it was interesting they specifically mentioned that he is under investigation for a hammer attack in Virginia. They also made sure to mention that he is foreign and actually from Israel.

The story I found to blog about is about a woman, Bethany Storro, who reported being attacked and having acid thrown on her and is now admitting that the acid burn was self-inflicted.
The Washington Post mostly focused on the facts. Storro initially claimed an African-American woman walked up to her holding a cup and asked her if she wanted to drink the contents and threw the liquid in her face. The article says that under further investigation the police found discrepancies in Storro's story and that during investigation of her home she admitted to making it all up. The article says that the acid looked more like it had been rubbed on that thrown on as the woman claimed. It also talked about how earlier this week Storro canceled her appearance on Oprah.
The CBS article said all the same things the Washington Post article said but when into way more depth about all the work the police did to investigate the false crime and the possibility of Storro being charged with filing a false police report and other possible charges from the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney. This article also talked about donation funds that had been set up by 2 local banks to help Storro pay for her medical bills stemming from the false attack and that local detectives would now work on making sure Storro returns all those donated funds. It was also mentioned that an attempt was made to contact Storro's parents in light of the news that the attack was false and that they did not find a way to contact the parents. Also, there were details about Storro's news conference after the attack where she told the press about her "horrific encounter" and what she would want to tell her attacker should she get the chance.
The CNN article went into more depth about the police finding discrepancies saying that a big one was the fact that Storro was wearing sunglasses during the attack which she claimed to have happened at night. There was also more detail about the home investigation which led to Storro's confession. This article also noted Storro's hospital treatment and release, the impact of the false investigation on the police and the community, further interviews with Storro's family, and that Storro was in a "fragile mental state". Also, again there was particular detail about interviews she gave the media about the false attack, this article had a quote she told a CNN affiliate about how she was in God's hands and how she wouldn't let her attacker ruin her life.All 3 articles noted the police finding discrepancies in Storro's story and that she was remorseful when she admitted that it was self inflicted. For the most part they all said the same thing with The Washington Post having the shortest article and leaving out details about the police charging Storro and CBS having the lengthiest but also most detailed article. The CNN article was somewhere between the Washington Post and CBS. I think CBS did the best job because it answered all the questions that the Washington Post left unanswered while going into great detail about what happened which CNN did not do. I don't think any of the outlets distorted any facts about the story.

deviance
people of walmart
The website I chose as a display of deviance is the 'People of Walmart' website. On this site, users share pictures, videos, and stories of strange people doing/wearing strange things while shopping at Walmart stores all across the country. My favorite feature of this website is the state button, I love to see how many crazies are in Virginia. I would classify this site as being entertaining, informational, and also a users forum for people to come together and share the crazy stuff they have seen at Walmart. On the website you can upload pictures, write personal stories, watch videos, comment on all the previously mentioned features, join the website (free), interact with other users, and there are also links to other websites about random funny things. Considering what I have seen on this site, I would agree that this site is devoted to deviance and most, if not all, of the content on this website exhibits deviance. From pictures of men dressed as female prostitutes to people wearing clothes with profanity written on it... need I say more?

Media criticism

In my search to find an article where media is critical of self I found a story about a Washington Post reporter who was fired for tweeting a false story. In light of the scandal and allegations against Ben Roethlisberger last year he was suspended from the Steeler's first 6 games of the season. A few weeks ago a Washington Post reporter, Mike Wise, tweeted that Roethlisberger would only be suspended for 5 games and the news spread very quickly. What I found most interesting was that Wise's defense for his tweet was that he falsely tweeted on purpose, and he did so to show how easy it is to make false claims on twitter and that twitter is not a credible new source. Based on the fact that on his twitter he says he is a writer for the Washington Post, the newspaper found grounds to dismiss him because in referencing his position as a reporter it made his twitter somewhat more reliable than the average user.
The criticism the author of the article offered was that while Wise had a good idea to expose the falsity of twitter, there was a better way he could have done it with out jeopardizing his job.While Wise was out to show how people blindly believe tweets and never check sources, I do not think he realized how quickly (and sadly) twitter has become a major source of information. Also, the author was critical of twitter in that agreed with Wise's motive to show people that twitter is not a news source or a credible source of information. Unless you want to know what Ashton Kutcher ate for dinner, don't look up important things on twitter. Or at the least, double check what you read on twitter before freaking out about it.
I wish this story was more widely known because way too many people believe things they read on twitter without taking 2 minutes to Google what they read and check the source. I personally think twitter is ridiculous and think this story proves that only complete idiots rely on twitter as a credible news source.

Media Fast
I chose Saturday September 3rd for my media fast. I picked this day because I had to work and I wouldn’t really have time to do anything else so it would be easy to not watch TV or listen to the radio since that is all I really have time to do.
I had to use my phone as an alarm clock, which happened around 9:30 am. I didn’t listen to the radio while I got ready for work and that practically ruined my shower. Thanks media fast. I swear my hair comes out much better when I get to listen to music while straightening it, but that is beside the point. I didn’t listen to the radio on the way to work, which made my 40 minute drive almost impossible. I smoked twice as much as I normally do while driving to work as a direct result of the bad hair and awkward car ride induced by this fast. (Just saying) While I was at work I did continue with my regular texting and calling activities but I only talked to my fiancé. Sorry media fast, but I can’t fast out my man. I didn’t talk to anyone else though, so I did greatly reduce the number of texts that I normally engage in. When I got off work I went home and read before going to sleep. I usually read before bed so this wasn’t any difference. I didn’t mention it in my media log because it’s not media. The only reason I didn’t watch TV on Saturday night was because for some reason I was completely exhausted.
1) What day did you choose to do the fast and why?
I chose to do my fast the day after my log because it seemed easiest. I picked a day I was working so the fast would be easy to do, when I’m at work I can’t watch TV. But if I could, it would be the best job ever.
2) What did you do instead?
If I hadn’t been tired on Saturday night I probably would have read a book instead of watching TV.
3) Any cheating? If so, what were the circumstances?
The only way I cheated was my refusal to not text my fiancé. I can fast from media, but not from him. We literally constantly call or text each other.
4) What was hardest to give up?
It was hard to not text other people that I usually text. I usually text my friends and my sister throughout the day and I didn’t text them on Saturday and it made me miss talking to them.
It also really sucked getting ready without listening to music because that is one of my favorite things to do. I had to make up songs in the shower and my hair came out all wrong. It was really lame.
5) How did the e-fast make you feel?
It made me realize how much I rely on my phone to talk to the ones that I love and at the end of the day I was sad that I didn’t get to talk to them Saturday. We don’t talk to make plans we talk to check in on each other and it sucked going to bed without talking to my sister all day.

Media Log

I woke up at 10:00 am to the sound of Shinedown singing me awake. It’s a pretty great way to wake up if I do say so myself. The song was Simple Man if anyone is wondering. I pretty much stayed on my phone and listening to the radio until noon when I clocked in at work. When customers aren’t paying attention and/or I get my break I’m on my phone. So I was texting and talking on my phone on and off from noon to 8:30pm. When I got off work my fiancé and I went home and watched Camp Rock 2 and then I went home and went to sleep. So I watched TV for about 2 ½ hours.
I knew this log would be pretty easy.
